Who’s Who at FJC


lev-pic Ritual Director Rabbi Lev Meirowitz Nelson was ordained in 2013 by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College, in Newton, MA. During school, he served as rabbinic intern at MIT Hillel and at the Tremont Street Shul in Cambridge, MA. Before rabbinical school, Lev taught 5th grade for three years at the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan and spent a year in Israel. He did his undergraduate degree in geology at Brown University, where he was also an active Hillel leader. Since 2013, Lev has been Director of Education at T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights.  Lev is the recipient of the 2017 Covenant Foundation Pomegranate Prize which honors rising Jewish educators by encouraging prize recipients in their pursuits, enabling them to accelerate their professional development and amplify their impact.

Lev lives one block from FJC with his wife, Eliana, and their sons Barzilai (“Buzz”) and Tav.

Educational Staff


JEC Director Lizzi Mazal

Lizzi is thrilled to bring the Jewish learning home to Flatbush Jewish Center in developing the Jewish Explorer’s Club. In her third year on the Beit Rabban Day School faculty, Lizzi has also served as a group teacher at the Brooklyn Apple Academy and Chickpeas Childcare, working with young children. A High Holiday Young Children’s Service and Tot Shabbat leader for Storahtelling and Park Slope Jewish Center, Lizzi also has an extensive and varied background in working with children of all ages in dance, movement, and fashion. Lizzi just earned her Master’s Degree at Brooklyn College in Early Childhood and Special Education, and gave her first conference paper on “The Educational Value of Silliness,” at the TASP/IPA conference at Rutgers. She has additional graduate training from the Davidson School of Jewish Education and a BA from Brooklyn College in Cultural and Linguistic Anthropology. This past summer, Lizzi completed an intensive three week program in Hebrew at Middlebury College in Vermont.
